The Story Behind Yippee Kids
Yippee Kids began in 2014 with one grandmother, a sewing machine, and a lot of love.
After losing our family farm during the political upheaval in Zimbabwe, we were forced to rebuild life from the ground up. Around the same time, we welcomed our first two grandchildren, and like many grandmothers, I wanted to make something special.
Always creative and skilled with a sewing machine, I began designing and sewing baby swings, slings and change mats as gifts for the growing group of grandchildren.
What started as handmade presents quickly grew into something more. Friends began asking for them. Then friends of friends. Before long, Yippee Kids was born.
Handmade with Heart
From the very beginning, every Yippee Kids product has been handcrafted by me.
I design the patterns, sources the fabrics, cuts every piece, dyes materials, and sews each product with care and precision. Even today, more than a decade later, I still oversee every part of the process.
I have only recently welcomed a little help with some of the sewing, but the creativity, craftsmanship and attention to detail are still very much mine.
A True Family Business
Yippee Kids is truly a family effort.
I was born and raised in Zimbabwe and have three daughters living across the world, in New Zealand, Brazil and Zimbabwe, who help support the business in different ways, including running most of the social media.
My husband, Colin also plays a part, painting the poles for the rope ladders and helping assemble some of the pieces.
Together, the whole family contributes to keeping Yippee Kids growing.
Built Through Word of Mouth
For many years, Yippee Kids has grown almost entirely through word of mouth.
Most of our products are sold through our social media pages, WhatsApp groups and happy customer recommendations.
You might also spot us from time to time at local markets or garden shows, where families can see and try our swings and hammocks in person.
